Most law enforcement agencies around the world commonly use tasers. This allows them to use 50,000 volts of electrical shock that temporarily shuts down the central nervous system of the person receiving the jolt instead of using bullets that could kill or seriously hurt the suspect. Anyone who gets tasered will experience uncontrollable contractions and they will instantly collapse.

This method is known as non-lethal force and is believed to have no lasting effects. Where exactly did the name Taser come from for this device? The person who invented the taser got the name from a children's adventure story written by Victor Appleton. The book was science fiction and told the story of a crime fighter who dealt with criminals by incapacitating them by using an electric rifle.

When the first letter of each word in the title was used it's spelled the word T.A.S.E.R. This is where the inventor of the device first came up with its name.

Taser International is located in Arizona and is the largest maker and seller of the product. They offer a number of different models to choose from for law enforcement and for civilians.

Other companies also manufacture this device such as Nova and Axon. Many police departments report that the use of this device reduces the number of injuries that occur to both the police and the public they serve and that is why they believe its use is effective.

They reported that it is an invaluable tool they can use together with other non-lethal weaponry. When the taser is used it fires 2 pointed electrodes which remain connected to the unit and which are projected buy nitrogen charges that are compressed. There is a cartridge with a pair of electrodes that provide a single shot or in some models can produce three shots and is then replaced. Depending on the device, there will be a specified range and the maximum range is 35 ft. The ones that are available to citizens who are not in law enforcement have a maximum range of 15 feet. To stop the recipient from being able to remove the electrodes they are barbed. Some of the earlier models didn't penetrate clothing well but the newer ones are very effective.

This device significantly increases the range the police can stand from an assailant when compared to batons or pepper spray. This helps police officers to stay farther away from the assailant when they show signs of aggression. The maker of this device says that it will debilitate an individual irrespective of their pain tolerance levels. It acts to force the muscles to contract so that the recipient goes to the ground in the fetal position. The maker says that there aren't any permanent effects to those being tasered. Over 6,000 correctional and law enforcement agencies across 49 states use this type of equipment. There are a number of states that had previously banned stun guns but have now altered their law so that state and local police can use Tasers. University campus police now commonly use this device. 43 states in the US allow the use of this type of weapon without putting any restrictions on them and that includes the public being allowed to use it for self-defense
